AstraZeneca's Celebrex and Pfizer Inc. have agreed to settle outstanding patent-infringement lawsuits over their arthritis pain relievers.

The settlement comes after a long time-old patent protecting the brand-name drug was challenged by Pfizer Inc. in 2015 and is now being challenged in federal court in California, in a multistate court case in September. Pfizer has said the generic drug, which was launched in 2003, is a cheaper alternative to its branded competitor.

Pfizer said in a statement Tuesday that it will be filing the same claims in the federal court and will share in the proceeds from the settlement with the pharmaceutical company.

“We are pleased to pursue these ongoing, important patent-infringement litigation and to resolve this matter in a timely manner,” Pfizer said.

Pfizer filed the case against Pfizer and its subsidiary in March, and filed suit against the pharmaceutical company in November. The case is the result of Pfizer's ongoing investigation and investigation into the alleged illegal trade-in of Celebrex and Pfizer's competing products.

Pfizer’s lawsuit is filed under the provisions of the Patent and Trademark Act, thePatent Act, and theand related federal laws. The suit alleges that the drug was a significant component of Pfizer's product, and that Pfizer knew, or should have known, that the product was likely to cause serious side effects, including heart problems and liver and kidney problems.

Pfizer filed its lawsuit in September. On June 1, the FDA announced that it would issue a warning to consumers to not buy Celebrex in the United States. The FDA has denied the allegations in the lawsuit and has not responded to the FDA's request for comment.

The FDA has also stated that there are no known safety risks to Celebrex and Pfizer's products. The FDA will not comment on Pfizer’s suit. The company said in a statement on Monday that it will not comment on Pfizer’s lawsuit.

Pfizer is facing a multistate case in California, in which a class of seven of its products are being challenged for patent infringement, over their safety and effectiveness.
